50m freestyle FAQ

What is the men’s 50m freestyle world record?

20.88, set by Cameron McEvoy of Australia at the China Open in Shenzhen on Mar 20, 2026. It broke César Cielo’s 20.91 from Dec 18, 2009, one of the last records left from the polyurethane-suit era. See all current marks on our swimming world records page.

What is the women’s 50m freestyle world record?

23.19, set by Kate Douglass of the USA in the final at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine on Aug 15, 2026. She had already broken the record that morning with 23.49 in the heats. Before that, Douglass (23.59) and Gretchen Walsh (23.55) had each broken it in June 2026, ending Sarah Sjöström’s 23.61 from 2023.

Who are the fastest Americans ever in the 50m freestyle?

Kate Douglass (23.19) and Caeleb Dressel (21.04). Dressel swam 21.04 at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju and matched it at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha. The USA has six swimmers in each top 25, level with Australia on the women’s list and more than any other country on the men’s list.

How many men have broken 21 seconds?

Three: Cameron McEvoy (20.88), César Cielo (20.91) and Frédérick Bousquet (20.94). Cielo and Bousquet both did it in 2009 in polyurethane suits, which were banned from Jan 1, 2010. McEvoy is the only man to break 21 seconds in a textile suit.

Who are the fastest British swimmers in the 50m freestyle?

Ben Proud, with 21.11 at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow, and Fran Halsall, with 23.96 at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Proud’s time is sixth on the men’s all-time list and is still the European Championships record.

Why isn’t Kristian Gkolomeev’s 20.81 on this list?

He swam 20.81 at the 2026 Enhanced Games, which allow performance-enhancing drugs. World Aquatics does not recognize those times, so they don’t count as world records or appear in the all-time rankings.

Is the 50m freestyle raced at the LA 2028 Olympics?

Yes. The 50m freestyle has been on the Olympic program for men and women since 1988. McEvoy is the reigning men’s Olympic champion from Paris 2024. See our LA 2028 swimming page for dates and events.
