200m freestyle FAQ

What is the men’s 200m freestyle world record?

1:42.00, set by Paul Biedermann of Germany at the 2009 World Championships in Rome on Jul 28, 2009. It is the oldest individual long course world record still standing and dates from the polyurethane-suit era. The fastest textile-suit swim is David Popovici’s 1:42.97 from 2022. See all current marks on our swimming world records page.

What is the women’s 200m freestyle world record?

1:52.23, set by Ariarne Titmus of Australia at the Australian Olympic Trials in Brisbane on Jun 12, 2024. Mollie O’Callaghan finished second in the same race in 1:52.48, the second-fastest time ever.

Who are the fastest Americans ever in the 200m freestyle?

Michael Phelps (1:42.96 at the 2008 Olympics) and Allison Schmitt (1:53.61 at the 2012 Olympics). Among active U.S. swimmers, Luke Hobson (1:43.73) and Gabriel Jett (1:43.96) lead the men and Claire Weinstein (1:54.67) the women.

Who moved into the top 25 in 2026?

Nine swimmers set their all-time bests this year. The biggest jump came from Zhang Zhanshuo of China, who swam an Asian record of 1:43.49 at the Asian Games in September to go fifth all-time. Lani Pallister tied Summer McIntosh for fifth on the women’s list with 1:53.65 at the Australian Trials.

Who are the fastest British swimmers in the 200m freestyle?

Tom Dean (1:44.22) and Freya Colbert (1:54.34). Dean and Duncan Scott went 1-2 in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic final. Colbert broke the British record at the British Championships in London in April 2026. Great Britain has three men in the top 25: Dean, Scott and Matt Richards.

Do relay swims count in the all-time rankings?

Only the lead-off leg, because the first swimmer starts from the blocks like an individual race. Léon Marchand’s 1:43.76 and Carlos D’Ambrosio’s 1:44.72 both came leading off relays at the 2026 European Championships. Splits from legs two, three and four use a flying start and never count.

Is the 200m freestyle raced at the LA 2028 Olympics?

Yes. It has been on the Olympic program without a break since 1968, for both men and women. See our LA 2028 swimming page for dates and events.
